Despite the conflict in Syria, some artists choose to stay
While Syria is in the midst of a great conflict, some artists still chose to stay despite the danger that lies ahead of them. They refused to evacuate nor leave because they want to document the suffering and serve as an outlet of media for people like us who can't see the whole thing happening.
There are many talented artists in Syria. The civil war that's currently happening became an "exodus of the country's creative individuals" as The Art Newspaper describes it. It's pretty normal and common for regular civilians to flee in a grave situation such as this. Some few brave individuals chose to express the event into an artistic way and here are some of them.
Mouneer Al Shaarani, a recognized calligrapher, designer and also a writer based on KHTT. He born in Syria and got a degree in Fine Arts at Damascus on 1977. He is highly influential in his field. He is also a recognized and regarded worldwide due to his unique calligraphic styles. His main reason for staying in Syria is because he wants to inspire the people around him despite what's going on around them.
Another one is Youssef Abdelke. Like Mouneer, he was also born in Qameshli Syria and studied at Damascus' Faculty of Arts on 1976. He was exiled from his homeland and got the chance to go back home in 2005 according to Claude Lemand. He exposes the "brutalities of life" in his unique symbolism and sinister undertones on his art. A perfect artist for Syria today.
While these are just some of those who chose to stay, there's still much more out there. Art is very diverse and any message can be communicated in any medium today. For them, they've used their art expertise to communicate, inspire and profess that there's still hope out there.
