‘Apocalypse Now’ Set To Become Video Game, Francis Ford Coppola Launches $900,000 Kickstarter Campaign
The 1979 Vietnam War classic “Apocalypse Now” is set to be turned into a role-playing video game after director Francis Ford Coppola’s film studio, American Zoetrope, launched a Kickstarter campaign aimed at getting support from both gamers and fans of the movie. The director’s company is looking to raise $900,000 to fund the game development.
As reported by Variety, the game will be developed by a team of seasoned veterans in conjunction with American Zoetrope. The report notes that the “Apocalypse Now” game will allow players to take on the role of Captain Willard and will take on the mission of trying to assassinate and renegade Colonel Kurtz.
“Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come,” Coppola said in a released statement. “Today, I’m joined by new daredevils, a team who want to make an interactive version of ‘Apocalypse Now,’ where you care Captain Benjamin Willard amidst the harsh backdrop of the Vietnam War.”
Those who will support the Kickstarter campaign for “Apocalypse Now” will be getting a slew of in-game rewards. Unique game options, as well as original props used in the film, will be given to those that pledge money to the game’s development.
The film “Apocalypse Now” was inspired by Joseph Conrad’s “Herat of Darkness” and starred Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, Laurence Fishburne and Dennis Hopper. The film served as an artful glimpse into the horrors of war and the realities of human cruelty.
But while fans of the film might share Coppola’s excitement for the video game version of “Apocalypse Now,” not everyone appears to be a fan. As a Wired article notes, the film has already influenced a slew of other video game titles centered on warfare like “Far Cry 3” and the “Call of Duty” series.
