‘La La Land’ Ticket Sales To Spike Following Best Picture Oscar Nod, Ties Record With 14 Nominations
“La La Land,” starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, set a record Tuesday morning by getting 14 Oscar nominations – a development that is expected to bolster ticket sales for the romantic musical comedy-drama, according to analysts. Among the Oscar nominations “La La Land” received was a nod for best picture.
As noted by Variety, “La La Land” has surpassed the $90 million mark after last weekend. And, following the record-tying number of Oscar nominations it received, is expected to be released in 3,000 locations after initially being shown in 1,865. The Lionsgate release is expected to reach the $100 million mark by the end of the weekend. The Variety report also points out that according to ticketing service Fandango, “La La Land” had 50 percent higher ticket sales following the announcement of the Academy Award nominations. The film also made history at the Golden Globes a month ago by being the first to nab seven trophies.
Apart from “La La Land,” fellow best picture nominees “Lion” and Moonlight” are likewise expected to see a surge at the box office following its respective nominations. “Those three films have the most upside in terms of their box office potential,” Exhibitor Relations Analyst Jeff Bock told Variety. “These are powerful films that a lot of people still haven’t seen. “Lion” is up for six awards, while “Moonlight” received eight nominations for its efforts.
“La La Land” stars Gosling and Stone received the best actor and best actress nominations. As noted by Wired, other awards the film is in the running for include best cinematography, best costume design, best original score, best original song for “City of Stars,” best sound editing, best sound mixing, best production design, best original screenplay and best film editing. The 89th Academy Awards airs live on Feb. 26 on ABC.
