One Direction songwriter protests against song cover at Trump's Inaugural Ball; 1D members yet to speak out
"One Direction" fans might not have any plans catching US President Donald Trump's inaugural concert last Friday, but a familiar song played during the evening had surely caught their attention.
Trump's "Make America Great Again" Inaugural Ball featured the YouTube sensations The Piano Guys performing live for the audience. The group has made a lot of covers of today's hit songs and became viral, but their recent cover of the 1D breakout song "What Makes You Beautiful" was met with criticism, especially from the songwriter himself, Savan Kotecha.
As reported by Billboard, Kotecha expressed his disappointment, stating that The Piano Guys did not ask permission from him to play the popular One Direction song at Trump's inaugural ball.
In an e-mail sent to Billboard, Kotecha said that he does not wish to hear his song being played for someone that perpetuates "divisiveness and bigotry." To note, Trump became controversial with his remarks during last year's presidential campaign, some of which were directed against different sectors in the United States.
Kotecha also explained that 2011's "What Makes You Beautiful" was written out of "love, joy, and acceptance," and the song being used to celebrate Trump's victory is unacceptable.
"The fact that it was used to celebrate a man who stands for divisiveness and bigotry breaks my heart," said Kotecha. "I'm sure there is nothing I can do about the use of the song at the inauguration now, but i felt I needed to express my disappointment."
As of now, One Direction members like Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson have yet to comment regarding the unconsented use of "What Makes You Beautiful" at the inaugural ball. Apparently, the British boyband's hit song was not the only one played at the inaugural concert without the singer's or songwriter's permission.
Rachel Platten's "Fight Song," which became prominent during Hillary Clinton's campaign, was also covered by The Piano Guys last Friday. As expected, Platten claimed that the Piano Guys never asked her permission to include "Fight Song" in their set list.
The Piano Guys answered that their performance during the inaugural concert was not pertaining to Trump's opponent during the election or anything about politics, New York Daily News reported.
