BBC Philharmonic Chooses Ben Gernon As The New Principal Guest Conductor

Ben Gernon is made the principal guest conductor of the BBC Philharmonic in autumn. Gernon will be one of the youngest conductors to have held a titled position with a BBC orchestra.

According to Classical Music, Gernon is one of the most highly rated young conductors in the UK. He has already had a successful working relationship with the Manchester-based orchestra. 

For two years, Gernon is working together with the BBC Philharmonic, conducting interactive concerts like The Red Brick Sessions. Gernon is happy to have the privilege to be the BBC Philharmonic's principal guest conductor and he is looking forward to working with them.

He started as a tuba player, studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before choosing to take up the baton. BBC Music magazine interviewed Gernon for the magazine's Rising Star series; he shared how the late Sir Colin Davis has inspired him to be a conductor.

According to Rhinegold, Gernon won the Nestle and Salzburg Festival Young Conductor's award and the Dudamel Fellow with the LA Philharmonic in 2013. Gernon will make his debuts with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras, and the Stuttgart Staatstheater Orchestra.

Gernon performed a wide range of projects with the BBC Philharmonic, ranging from core classical works to the UK premiere of Thomas Larcher's Ouroboros. And has pleased audiences in many of their regular venues across the North of England.

Gernon is a perfect match for the BBC Philharmonic bold and adventurous music making because of his passion for new music for reaching new audiences and for exploring the new technologies being developed by the BBC coupled with his brilliance as a conductor.
