Longtime Subscriber Denied Entry At Lincoln Center For Anti-Trump Sign
A Metropolitan Opera and New York Philharmonic subscriber for over 60 years were banned in viewing the Budapest Festival Orchestra at Lincoln Center. Jenny Heinz showed up with an anti-Trump sign on her jacket and refused to remove it.
According to The New York Times, Jenny Heinz was wearing a jacket with an anti-Trump sign that says "NO! In the name of humanity, we refuse to accept a fascist America" which she refused to removed. As a result, the Lincoln Center officials did not allow Jenny to view the Budapest Festival orchestra.
Jenny Heinz wore the jacket when she attended a protest outside Trump Tower in November. She was also looking forward to viewed the orchestra since one of the cellists was almost stopped from entering the US by President Trump's travel ban.
However, Jenny Heinz was given a choice between the performance and the sign but she chose the sign. According to Vulture, officials of Lincoln Center gave Heinz a refund for the ticket and insisted that signs of any kind are not permitted on the Lincoln Center premises.
The center would have tolerated it if it was expressed on a T-shirt or a pin but Norman Siegel, the civil rights lawyer said it doesn't make sense. Mr. Siegel also added that Jenny Heinz sign would not disturb other concert goes since it will not be visible in the hall once she sat down.
This event flared the question about the political role of the theaters. However, different theaters have a different approach towards these kinds of incidents.
The Carnegie Hall has no specific policy on signs but their spokesperson said that the management will address the issue on a case-by-case basis. But theaters like" Radio City Music Hall" prohibited the signs and banners at any time.
But Jenny Heinz believes that art had always been political and even if it's disturbing some people, it will get them moving for a moment into a place where they think about what is happening.
