An artistic black-haired teenager who just lived around the corner, a print was given. For how many years have passed, it was proudly displayed in an obvious spot; above its fryers.
Five decades have gone; David Hockney's important early lithograph "Fish and Chip Shop" is to be sold by Christie's in London next month. The auction house's head of prints Murray Macaulay claimed that it was essential and an extraordinary object added with its passion for its history. "There is something wonderful about a local chippy with a rare Hockney hanging above the fryer," said Murray Macaulay.
The time when David Hockney was still 17-year-old, he was studying at the Bradford School of Art. According to The Guardian, David always visited the "Sea Catch Fish and Chip Shop" in Eccleshill to gain some inspiration in his studies. His artwork shows how smart a young David, leaning on the counter waiting for his food to be prepared by the owners Janet and Hayden Smith who were also neighbors of David Hockney's family.
David Hockney made five up to six prints and gave one to the Smiths as a token of his appreciation. Then Smith's displayed it above it fryers until the shop was closed in 1970. "Fish and Chip Shop" was one of the three lithographs that David Hockney made in 1954 which was his early attempt into printmaking and then became an important profession in his life.
David Hockney's "Fish and Chip Shop" was an amazing image that's not bursting with vibrant colors for which he was known at that time the current subject of a retrospective at Tate Britain, according to its official site Tate UK. The print was proudly displayed in the Smith home after they retired and has been passed down from generation to generation through their family.
What makes David Hockney a special artist is that he values the people that were once part of his life; it's a thread that has run throughout his career. "Fish and Chip Shop" was estimated to be sold starting from $7800 up to $9900 and will be convenient this coming March 29, 2017.
