US General Says To Break The Stalemate More Troops Needed
U.S. general commanding the forces in Afghanistan told the lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Thursday that the war in Afghanistan was in stalemate. In order to break the dilemma, they need more people and spend billion more dollars.
Army General John Nicholson warned the Armed Services Committee that the outside powers such as Russia and Iran are aiding the Taliban making it difficult to the U.S.-backed government in Kabul to make and keep the advancements against insurgents. He told them that the war was in stalemate after he was asked if the US and its allies are winning or losing according to Fox News.
Despite having more American troops on the ground in Afghanistan than in Iraq engaged in the ISIS fight, some say that Afghanistan has become the forgotten war. The subject rarely surface and the general's testimony sparked the America's longest-running war onto front pages.
Trump administration's policy on Afghanistan is still a question and when Trump visited the military headquarters at U.S. Central Command he did not mention it. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz, blamed Obama's decision on 2012 when he decided to have a steady withdrawal of American combat troops according to NPR.
Added to the Afghanistan problems are their government is weak it can't even sustain itself without heavy international problems, although their military improving it cannot win decisively against the insurgents. Also one of the challenges that the Taliban is enjoying is the protection from the criminal Haqqani Network in places such as Quetta, out of the reach of major U.S. combat power.
While Russia is claiming that they were not helping the Taliban, Nicholson argued that it was a false narrative in order to undermine the United States and NATO. He said that the counter mission was working but he needed more resources and more troops to train the Afghanistan's troops to keep control of their territory and break the stalemate.
