‘World War Z 2’ Release Moved, Could Take Two More Years To Release
Fans of zombie pandemic film “World War Z” got some disappointing news Monday, as Paramount Pictures and Skydance Entertainment announced it would be moving the sequel, “World War Z 2's,” release to a later date. The frenetic zombie action flick was scheduled to be released this June. As of this writing, Paramount has yet to announce a new release date.
As noted by Variety, “World War Z 2” was set to hit cinemas on June 9 despite currently not having a single frame shot for the movie. Cinema Blend points out that the 2013 hit likewise dealt with similar delays, having endured seven weeks worth of reshoots. The delay did not affect “World War Z’s” performance at the box office, though, raking in $540 million worldwide. According to insiders cited by The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount is looking to have “World War Z 2” released in 2018 or 2019.
There has been very little news surrounding “World War Z 2” – a movie franchise loosely based on the best-selling Max Brooks novel – apart from Brad Pitt reprising his role as Gerry Lane. “World War Z 2” was originally set to be directed by J.A. Bayona before he left the sequel for what was termed “other commitments.” He was later tasked with “Jurassic World 2.” Cinema Blend notes that, while there has been no official word on who will direct “World War Z 2,” one name that has been floated around is David Fincher.
Variety first reported that Pitt and Paramount were in talks with Fincher. Fincher has a long history with Pitt, directing the veteran actor in the 1995 movie “Seven,” the cult classic “Fight Club” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” As pointed out by Cinema Blend, the prospective “World War Z 2” director’s last film was 2014’s “Gone Girl.”
