AT&T Rolls Out 5G Evolution; Austin, Indianapolis To Wait Until Late This Year
AT&T is set to roll out for 5G in the US, beginning with Austin and Indianapolis markets later this year. The telecom made the announcement during a recent event in San Francisco.
AT&T's project of providing a new high-speed network is expected to reach the first top speeds of 400 Mbps. This suggests 40 times faster cellular data connection compared to the standard rate.
Although the goal seems unreal for a 5G, which is said to hit 1 Gbps, AT&T claims that by the end of 2017, the advancements in the network will allow for theoretical top speeds in terms of gigabit range. Given such, the mobile connections will be placed at par with the fiber internet.
AT&T's 5G project is reportedly part of the company's broader network upgrade called Network 3.0, which is also known as Indigo. According to reports, the concept is based on the use of software advancement in order to make the current hardware become more capable. This eventually leads to a decreased upgrade costs while speeds can increase without the need for AT&T to make more hardware investments, The Verge reported.
AT&T has been beaten by Sprint in terms of the number of subscribers. According to the fourth largest wireless carrier in the US, 405,000 new post-paid subscribers were added to the company, in which 368,000 were phone subscribers. The statistics revealed shows the highest rate of growth recorded by Sprint in four years. The numbers, according to analysts, also suggest that Sprint company is slowly pulling itself out from years of losses, which were previously reported to have been caused by poor service and a network that lagged behind AT&T and other competitors, CNET reported.
