Grand Gallerie dell’Accademia Presents ‘Philip Guston and The Poets” in Biennale
Museums, art galleries, and foundations of La Serenissima compete for attention, aiming to mount their finest shows in every two years when the Venice Biennale opens. Gallerie dell'Accademia di Venezia, in collaboration with Guston's Estate, will be presenting "Philip Guston and the Poets," on May 10, during the 57th Venice Biennale.
According to Artnet News, the exhibition titled "Philip Guston and the Poets" will showcase Philip Guston's works for over 50 years which will include 50 paintings and 25 drawings dating from 1930 to 1980, the year the artist died. It will show his development from development from modernist to abstract, expressive, and figurative works through his favorite poets such as D. H. Lawrence, W. B. Yeats, Wallace Stevens, Eugenio Montale, and T. S. Eliot.
It will be the first American artist exhibition in the halls of the Accademia. The exhibition will be curated by Dr. Kosme de Barañano, a Guston expert who previously served as executive director of the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern and as deputy director of the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid.
The works in the exhibition clearly show the appreciation of the artist to Italy which adds complex and rich textural depth to his work according to the curator. The ideas that surround his works are metaphysics, the physical act of creation, "visionary awareness," and fragmentation.
According to The New York Times, Philip Guston began as a muralist, painting for the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. It became a highly regarded Abstract Expressionist painter before returning to figuration late in his career, in a scabrous, cartoon-influenced style that shocked his contemporaries.
The exhibition will remain on view until September 3, 2017, at the Accademia, the director is happy to bring Guston's work into context and to encourage continued study and new interpretation of his work, is a true pleasure for them.
