‘Breaking News’ Exhibit Featured in Getty Museum Los Angeles
A unique art exhibition running at Getty Museum in Los Angeles presents the same old news in an artistic way.
According to the National Public Radio, the exhibition titled, "Breaking News: Turning the Lens on News Media" showcases over 200 photos and videos mixed and matched by 17 different artists. From images of natural calamities to war and terrorism, the exhibition features many "Breaking News" moments.
One particular work by two of the artists is made of photographs from the Vietnam War. The pictures lifted from TV screens, magazines and newspapers depict the disastrous effect of war on human lives.
The work, as per the curator of the show Arpad Kovacs, is politically very aggressive. The photographs featured in the exhibition are sourced from many underground magazines. For Donald Blumberg, one of the participants, this lively and vivid imagery takes the viewer to a surreal past.
According to the South California Public Radio, the news gathered and the news broadcasted are two different things. Many times the editor's scissors shape a news very differently. This exhibition is made of many such "media failings". Artists like Donald Blumberg and Martha Rosler show the pain and agony hidden in the glory of war that is not brought to the fore most of the times.
Artist Omer Fast's work relives the terror, anxiety, and chaos that followed the horrific terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre. His artwork comprises of CNN reports in a unique monolog and heartrending photographs.
The bold exhibition showcases various artist's reaction and perception of already published and broadcasted mass media. The unique exhibition is currently being held at the Getty Centre, Los Angeles and will continue until April 30.
