‘The Humans’ Will Take Final Bow on Broadway in January; Final Chance to Get Tickets!
Although it's been one of the most popular theatrical plays of the year, as evident by its four Tony Award wins, the cast of The Humans will be taking their final bow on Jan. 15. That means there's just a little time left to see one of the Great White Way's most buzzed about plays in years.
Written by playwright Stephen Karam, a two-time Pulitzer finalist, The Humans started playing this Broadway season after a successful Off-Broadway run with Roundabout Theatre Company.
It's been quite the year for Karam's Broadway debut. After earning critical kudos following its opening at the Helen Hayes Theater on Jan. 24, it moved to the Schoenfeld Theater following an impressive showing during awards season. In addition to its four Tony wins-including Best Play-the family drama also took home Lucille Lortel, New York Drama Critics Circle and Outer Critics Circle awards.
The story follows Erik Blake, who after a sleepless night, has brought his family from Pennsylvania to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughter's new apartment. As darkness falls outside the crumbling pre-war duplex, mysterious things start to go bump in the night and family tensions reach a boiling point.
The show is directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello and stars Reed Birney, Jayne Houdyshell, (both of whom won 2016 Tony Awards for their performances), Cassie Beck and Lauren Klein. The foursome has been with the show since its opening and are expected to stay through its entire run.
The play had great staying power at the box office in 2016 and at one point in late September, was the only non-musical show running on Broadway, a distinction earned by increasingly strong ticket sales following the positive word of mouth. Tickets to see The Humans can be purchased directly through the box office, where prices range from $39-$147. To compare, resale ticket prices are much more expensive, with tickets averaging $158 for all remaining shows.
While ardent theatergoers have known about the show since its Roundabout run, a whole slew of Broadway patrons and tourists became interested after this year's Tony's. For those who were putting off seeing it until 2017, now is the time to act as closing notices for shows of this caliber often send people to the box office in droves and chances are it will sell out quickly.
