Detroit Symphony Orchestra Gives a New, Cuboid Moniker to Its Recital Hall
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has taken steps to rename its recital hall as the The Peter D. & Julie F. Cummings Cube in honor of the forenamed DSO benefactors. The venue, located within the beloved Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center facility, was previously known to D-town residents and DSO patrons as the "Music Box."
A recent article published by the Detroit Free Press goes into the specifics of the hall's new moniker. In the piece, the publication states that the aforementioned Cummings family has given over $10 million dollars in donations to the DSO over the previous orchestral seasons:
"The former Music Box will be rechristened as the Cube -- officially the Peter D. & Julie F. Cummings Cube - in honor of the couple's cumulative $10 million of lifetime giving to the orchestra, including a whopping $3.5-million commitment. ... The new gift, which has not been publicly disclosed until now, ranks on the short list of the largest one-time contributions to the orchestra."
A spokesman for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra offered some further detail on the "Cube," helping to illuminate the reasons behind its sudden name change in a statement published by The Detroit News. Namely, the spokesman says the recital hall's rechristening is meant to usher in a new era for the DSO and coincides with a new slogan for the performance venue:
"Eclectic music and other original programming will be the focus of the 'Cube,' which the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will promote with the slogan 'Curated, urban, boundless experiences,' according to Ben Breuninger, a DSO spokesman."
