Prince Gets Classical Music Tribute From the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra This Fall

By Philip Trapp on Jun 27, 2016 11:15 AM EDT

Iconic artist Prince will receive a special symphonic honor this fall when the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra unveils its classical music tribute to the beloved "Purple One," The Music of Prince.

Part of the symphony's new season, the Indianapolis Orchestra will be one of the first classical ensembles to tackle the interpolations by composer and conductor Brent Havens. As reported by RTV6, the concert intends to shed new light on Prince's famous catalog this October:

"The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra plans to pay tribute to Prince this fall with a special concert showcasing some of the late artist's greatest hits. Conductor Brent Havens will present symphonic performances of Prince's eclectic body of genre-fusing work on October 15 at downtown Indianapolis' Hilbert Circle Theatre."

The unique showcase of the artist's work will feature symphonious renditions of some of the singer and guitarist's most renowned hit singles, including reimagined selections from his chart-topping albums like 1999, Parade and Sign o' the Times:

"Featured songs will include 'Purple Rain,' 'Kiss,' 'When Doves Cry,' 'Raspberry Beret,' 'U Got the Look,' 'Little Red Corvette,' and 'I Would Die 4 U,' just a handful of the dozens of hits for the musician who died in April at the age of 57."

Prince died on April 21 at his Chanhassen, Minnesota home and recording complex, Paisley Park Studios. An outpouring of appreciation and respect for the artist was displayed worldwide over the next several weeks, including a high-profile tribute at this year's Billboard Music Awards from pop singer Madonna.

As we previously reported on our sister sites Music Times and Classicalite, sales of Prince's back catalog soared after the artist's untimely death -- we also remembered Prince's contribution to the ballet world with his music video introduction of dancer Misty Copeland.
