Sally Field Makes Her Broadway Return in 'The Glass Menagerie' This Spring
Legendary actress Sally Field returns to Broadway next spring in a revival of Tennessee Williams' career-making 1944 semi-autobiographical piece, The Glass Menagerie. Field will portray Southern belle Amanda Wingfield in the famed "memory play."
The Forrest Gump star previously assumed the part in The Glass Menagerie's 2004 Kennedy Center performance. Extolled by Field as one of the most rewarding roles to inhabit, she recently disclosed her anticipation to dig deeper into the portrayal this time around:
"Amanda is such the quintessential character I'd love to know, to be able to really feel like I owned her in some way," Field told the Associated Press. "I have always felt like I didn't really get enough of that at all."
At 69 years old, Field is one of the most enduring actresses of American film and television. She got her start with a bit part in 1962's Moon Pilot and has since been involved in over 30 cinematic productions. Regarding her strength in years, the Steel Magnolias alumna told NPR of her collected experience over the decades:
"I've gathered strength behind my years, I owned them, I've earned them, I've deserved them, I have a right to have them. And I don't like my neck, I don't like a lot of things but it's OK, it's OK. Behind my years I have value that doesn't come when you're 50 or 40 or 30 or 20, it doesn't come until you've been in that saddle for a number of years."
Produced by Scott Rudin, The Glass Menagerie revival will be helmed by Tony-winning director Sam Gold. Actor/director Joe Mantello, a Tony winner himself, will be playing Amanda's son, shoe salesman and frustrated poet Tom Wingfield. The play also marks Mantello's return to Broadway acting -- it will be his first onstage appearance since 2011's The Normal Heart.
