'A List of Cages' by Robin Roe Review: It's All About Perspective
“A List of Cages” by Robin Roe is a story of both struggle and perspective. The narrative shifts between characters bringing certain events in a different light, not undermining them, but enriching the experience through a different point of view. So, what is all the fuss about?
The Story Sanctuary has a thorough review on the book covering the story, concept, elements and major issues covered in the book. The main character’s name is Julian, who is a silent, solitary boy studying in an everyday high school. His desire to evade his struggles makes him constantly avoid meetings with the school’s councilor. Tired from the failing meetings, she sends a senior named Adam to find Julian and try to contact him. The moment Adam meets Julian he recognizes the boy who was living with Adam and his mom as a foster kid five years ago.
Goodreads’ cover of the book enriches the review in a positive manner. Adam is revealed to be diagnosed with ADHD, but it rarely bothers him. On the other hand, Adam’s mother is much more bothered by it and is in constant search of homeopathic remedies for his conditions, as she has had a bad experience with modern day medicine’s side effects. Adam has a lot of friends, so he sees the meeting with Julian as an opportunity to enlarge his social circle, but after a few good days, it becomes apparent to Adam that Julian is holding something back and the secret behind it may cost both the boys’ lives.
