'Handmaid’s Tale Latest Dystopian Novel To Shoot Up Amazon’s Best-seller List During Donald Trump Presidency!
With the United States’ political climate of divisiveness and uncertainty, the trend of dystopian novels climbing to the top of Amazon’s best-seller list carried on with Canadian author Margaret Atwood’s “Handmaid’s Tale” taking the top spot. Previously, titles such as George Orwell’s “1984” and “Farmhouse,” as well as Sinclair Lewis’ “It Can’t Happen Here” and “The Origins of Totalitarianism” by Hannah Arendt have also seen its place at the top of the e-commerce company’s list.
As noted by the Huffington Post, “Handmaid’s Tale” owes part of its recent popularity to a Super Bowl teaser for the Hulu series adaptation of the book. Originally published in 1985, “Handmaid’s Tale” is about the rule of an oligarchy called The Republic of Glead, which turns a once egalitarian society into one that sees women thrown into subservient roles – losing their rights to hold jobs, own property, and vast other rights.
The Hulu series adaptation of “Handmaid’s Tale” stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred, and is joined by what is being acclaimed as a stellar cast that includes “American Horror Story” star Joseph Fiennes and “Orange Is The New Black’s” Samira Wiley. The show premieres on April 26.
Last month, the New York Times reported that the publishers of Orwell’s “1984” had to quickly order 75,000 new copies of the novel about a dystopian future where critical thought takes a backseat under a totalitarian regime. The development occurred after the “Handmaid’s Tale” brethren saw itself shoot to the top of the Amazon best-seller list.
As noted by the New York Times report, the rise of demand for books like “Handmaid’s Tale” began following the viral “Meet the Press” interview with Donald Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, where she referred to press secretary Sean Spicer’s claim that the recent presidential inauguration was the “largest audience ever to witness an inauguration” as alternative facts.
