‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ Gets Boost From Donald Trump, Beats Jimmy Fallon In Weekly Ratings
It’s been an uphill climb for Stephen Colbert ever since he took over from David Letterman in 2015 with “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” But if there’s anything good he can point to since U.S. President Donald Trump took office, it’s that for the first time since his move to CBS, Colbert won the weekly late-night ratings over NBC’s Jimmy Fallon.
As reported by the Washington Post, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” managed to edge “The Tonight Show” by averaging 2.77 million viewers (The Jimmy Fallon led show averaged 2.76 million). As noted by the report, it was Colbert’s first weekly win in over a year, whose show has seen a steady incline in ratings since the election.
“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” won Monday – Stephen Colbert’s first show back from a weeklong vacation, and repeated the feat the following day when Colbert’s “The Daily Show” boss Jon Stewart guested for a segment in which he loosely impersonated Donald Trump. According to CBS, Colbert’s Monday night monologue reached 4 million views on YouTube.
Screener notes that “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” was one of the few big winners in the Jan. 30 to Feb. 3 2017 ratings. “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” fell from a 0.75 rating to a 0.67 in adults aged 18-49—which stands as one of the shows lowest-rated weeks of the current season. “Late Night with Seth Meyers” slightly fell from 0.39 to 0.38, while “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (0.45) and “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (0.30) also fared under “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Donald Trump’s wildly unorthodox presidency appears set to feed “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” with an infinite amount of materials for the foreseeable future. “You got to give the guy credit, he gets a lot of stuff undone” Colbert quipped last week.
