Broadway Con And Actor's Equity Association Finally Settle Their Issues
The Actors' Equity Association resolved some disputes with BroadwayCon which saw the withdrawal of a "do not work" order. This enabled the fans to enjoy the theater convention thoroughly on Friday.
According to The New York Times, BroadwayCon is a for-profit venture which was commenced by the organizers of a similar event for Harry Potter fans. At this year's event, several performers like Josh Groban, Kelli O'Hara and Laura Osnes graced the event with their presence. A few sessions involving other performers who were supposed to sing show tunes and songs from jukebox musicals, although, were altered during the weekend. According to Melissa Anelli, one of the event's main organizers, these shows required a different type of contract and the budget for the convention became so high that the decision had to be taken.
Due to this problem, certain actors who were also supposed to sing were replaced by songwriters and composers in this year's BroadwayCon. They had to appear in other sessions of the convention. For example, Darren Criss had to appear on a panel and played a part in a theatre-oriented game show. Many others also had to change timings or swap roles in order to accommodate all the features.
This year's BroadwayCon saw an attendance of almost 5000 fans at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Centre. The convention was full of features like performances, panel discussions and autograph sessions as well as singalongs for the fans.
According to the Playbill, the closing ceremony of the BroadwayCon was as grand as the opening one. Actor Sam Tanabe sang along with the BroadwayCon staff as the curtains came down on the three-day extravaganza. Referring to the turmoil that America along with the world is seeing in the recent times, Melissa Anelli in her closing speech thanked all the fans who were present at the convention. She said that the spirit of the theater community is ever growing and is always empowering and nothing can stop it. She also urged the fans to remember the love, passion, friendship and enlightenment of this particular weekend and rejoice the fun whenever they face extremism or bigotry in the outside world.
It was a wonderful weekend at the BroadwayCon that ran through 3rd-5th February. Speaking about the event, Ms. Anelli said that they are already in discussion for a proper contract with the union for the next year. This will eradicate any problems or disputes such as the one that occurred this year.
