Glenn Close Is Returning To Broadway With A Revival Of Andrew Webber's 'Sunset Boulevard'
Opera expert Glenn Close is returning to Broadway in a revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony Award-winning Best Musical, "Sunset Boulevard". The show will officially open February 9 at the Palace Theatre. Close is back on the center stage more than two decades after she won a Tony Award in the show's original Broadway run.
Close, the three-time Tony Award winner portrayed the lead role of Norma Desmond in its original Broadway production titled "Sunset" in 1994. According to Playbill, the rest of the cast includes Michael Xavier as Joe Gillis, Fred Johanson as Max von Mayerling, and Siobhan Dillon as Betty Schaefer. In addition, "Sunset Boulevard" also boasts a stupendous supporting cast of Nancy Anderson, T. Oliver Reid, Lance Roberts, Stephanie Rothenberg, Mackenzie Bell, Preston Truman Boyd, Drew Foster, David Hess, Brittney Johnson, Katie Ladner, Stephanie Martignetti, Barry Busby, Britney Coleman, Julian Decker, Anissa Felix, Graham Rowat, Paul Schoeffler, Lauralyn McClelland, Andy Taylor, Sean Thompson, Matt Wall, and Jim Walton.
Last year, the "Sunset Boulevard" boosted the cash-strapped English National Opera with continuous full house shows. It also marked Close's West End debut that featured a massive 40-piece orchestra. Directed by Lonny Price, "Sunset Boulevard" is based on Billy Wilder's classic film of the same name and is scheduled to play a limited 16-week engagement at the Broadway. Variety highlighted that Close, the 69-year-old actress, who is nearly 20 years older than her character, made the ENO revival of "Sunset Boulevard" one of London's biggest stage hits last year. Further, critics too poured accolades for giving a fresh texture to the role.
The ENO production of "Sunset Boulevard" that features has by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is an adaptation of a book written by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, and lyrics by Black and Christopher Hampton, and was already nominated for two Evening Standard Awards, including Best Musical and a Best Musical Performance nomination for Close.
