Brooklyn Academy of Music To Host European Avant-Garde Adaptations Plays in US This Year
The US have been putting its interest in one of the European imports: avant-garde theatrical adaptations. These kinds of production are not new but its popularity is rising. The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) has been so much into these avant-garde adaptations.
From an update on Howlround, BAM has presented its annual Next Wave Festival this past fall with all its notable productions. All these productions make use of the Greek myth texts, the diary of a schizophrenic dancer, and five Shakespearean histories. In spite of each story's distinctive and different contents, the intentions of the production were strangely similar. There are at least three avant-garde adaptations, namely:
September - "Phaedra(s)" Directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski
According to Arts Journal, in Greek mythology, Phaedra was the second wife of Theseus who brought ruin to herself, her family, and her country when she fell madly in love with her stepson Hippolytus. Phaedra is played out in three different ways according to three distinctive sources: a madness-driven text by the Lebanese-Canadian playwright WajdiMouawad, a cruelty-driven play by the English playwright Sarah Kane, who committed suicide when she was twenty-eight, and a humour-driven essay by the South African writer J. M. Coetzee.
October -"Letter to a Man", Directed by Robert Wilson
The story of Wilson's production revolves around the later personal writings of deceased Russian dance legend Vaslav Nijinsky and his battle with schizophrenia, portrayed by living Russian dance legend Mikhail Baryshnikov.
November - "Kings of War", Directed by Ivo van Hove
Kings of War is to Shakespeare's Henry V, Henry VI (Parts 1-3), and Richard III. The story stems out from the lust for power. Director, Van Hove is also best known for his reinterpretation of classical works such as Antigone to Angels in America to Arthur Miller. Kings of War incorporates a live and recorded video.
