Aged Only 24, Jacob Jonas Is Already The Next Big Thing In Choreography
Dancing can be of various types, ranging from the sedate and classy kind in ballet to that of the rather vibrant hip hop. The Jacob Jonas' Dance Company is creating a niche my mixing and matching two different styles into one seamless and streamlined performance.
According to Los Angeles Times, the Jacob Jonas' Dance Company has taken dancing to another level by merging break dancing with ballet. It is gaining popularity with live shows bringing in dissimilar dance movements involving break dance, acrobatics, modern dance and contemporary ballet. The company is coming up with its next show at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on Friday that involves four distinctive acts out of which two will be world premieres. Also a short film directed by Jonas and recorded at the Getty will be showcased after the closing hours of the museum.
Jacob Jonas is a former SoCal skateboarder who started off with dance at 13 and became a part of street performance troupe called the Calypso Tumblers in Venice. His first full length piece of choreography "In a Room on Broad St." opened to rave reviews in New York, brought in by Ailey Citigroup Theatre in 2014 and eatured at the Wallis Annenberg Center as well.
Jonas is hailed not only as an artist but also as a businessman who knows how to cash on the fame received immediately. Latching onto the success of his piece, he immediately introduced his company to the youth market through a social media campaign called #CamerasandDancers involving photographers and dancers to collaborate and perform flash-mob style at cultural institutions such as the Getty, the Hammer Museum in Westwood or the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The images from this program were brought to light by the participants via social media platforms which according to Jonas involved millions of people.
According to The Argonaut, Jonas brought together 25 of Los Angeles' most legendary dancers and choreographers at the Dance Camera West film festival in 2015 to perform in an unforgettable and improvised dance jam session at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The session involved dancing stalwarts like former Alvin Ailey dancer Hector Mercado and Emmy-winning choreographer Anita Mann who shared their valuable experience on the effect of dance in their lives through movement and spoken word.
"To me that is fascinating. Mixing this diversity while showcasing and telling the stories of the talented and remarkable artists I work with is what I am hoping to accomplish and share with those who see my work." Jonas said about his working style.
Within a rather short period of time, Jonas has been able to establish his company on firm foot holding. The fresh and wonderful experience brought in by them is setting new trends and is surely going to scale new heights in near future.
