High School Student's Controversial Painting Again Taken Down By Republicans

Paintings are mostly a beautiful sight but not always. Sometimes they are akin weapons against the society and state. One such painting has proved to be a headache for the Republicans who are calling it "disgusting".

According to The Washington Times, Mr. Paul Ryan a Wisconsin Republican is of the opinion that the painting showing cops as animals is violating rules. In his words, the painting "exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic and gruesome nature."

Earlier the painting was declared a winner by Rep. William "Lacy" Clay, a Missouri Democrat in a congressional art contest. Mr. Clay and other members of the Black Congressional Caucus are of the opinion that the painting should stay as it is in the Capitol.

The "Untitled#1" painting has been thematically representing the unrest in Ferguson, Mo. in 2014. The painting is projecting the unrest that occurred due to the shooting of African-American teen Micheal Brown by white police officer Darren Wilson on August 9, 2014. It depicts the policemen as animals, having the head of wild boars.

According to NBC News the teenage student David Pulphus has weaved the painting around "Racism Kills". The painting was taken down thrice from the wall of the Capitol and returned to Mr. Clay's office by the Republicans namely Rep. Duncan Hunter, Rep. Doug Lamborn and latest by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher. Every time the painting is put down, Clay and his colleagues put it back on the walls of the Capitol Hallway along with the existing 400 other winner paintings.

Rep. Dave Reichert who was a former police officer himself took notice of the situation and has sent a letter to the Architect of the Capitol inquiring whether the painting in question is eligible for public display. Reichert personally terms it a clear violation of the guidelines prescribed by the state art.

America has a dark history of racism. The incident at Ferguson, Mo. strengthens that ugly truth and is seemingly the main idea behind the painting that shows animal-policemen pointing guns at the black people. It is an unfortunate insight on the effect of the long drawn battle of skin color in America.
