Norah Jones and Others Bring the House Down at Newport Jazz Festival
The legendary Newport Jazz Festival went down this weekend in Rhode Island -- the historic American festival that introduced Northeastern audiences to Miles Davis in 1955.
For the 2016 edition of the jazzy fest, headliners such as sultry soul crooner Norah Jones and acclaimed composer and pianist Chick Corea (along with with his "Chick Corea Trilogy" band) treated attendees to their bluesy musical stylings.
In addition to music from Jones and Corea, Newport concertgoers for the festival's three-day run this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday were served up sets by the likes of Gregory Porter, the Heath Brothers, Kenny Barron, Lizz Wright, Monty Alexander, the Westerlies, Robert Glasper, Wilco's Nels Cline, Peter Apfelbaum, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Revis and Donny McCaslin.
Jon Garelick of the Boston Globe reported on Jones' blues-infused performance, taking refuge in the singer's dearth of political pontification in this knives-out election season:
"Jones's bluesy consolation was probably one strong reason the Saturday show was sold out on this kaleidoscopic weekend of jazz. In the chunk of her set that I caught (another aspect of the Newport kaleidoscope: with four stages, you've got to keep moving), Jones didn't utter a political word -- unless you count a phrase from a new song, 'I can't stand when you tell me to get back,' in which the personal seemed political. Jones commented only that it was '70s Elvis.'"
This year's Newport Jazz Festival marked its final year as organized by longtime music director Geroge Wein, who has been called the "most famous jazz impresario." As reported by Providence, Rhode Island's WPRI-TV, next year's fest will be curated by jazz man Christian McBride:
"Pianist Chick Corea headlines Friday night at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and will be joined by drummer Brian Blade and bassist Christian McBride. McBride has been named the new artistic director of the festival, and will be taking the reins from festival founder George Wein next year."
